Broadleaf evergreen azalea, shrub to 4 ft (1.2 m) tall. Small azalea-type leaves. Flowers 5 cm, vivid reddish-purple, double (hose-in-hose), blotch in both "hoses".
Sun (for flower production) to part shade (maintenance of flower color), fast growing. In full sun portions of flower petals quickly (1-2 days) bleach to near white.
Hardy to USDA Zone 5 (excellent hardiness)
One of the Gable hybrid azaleas, which are hardy evergreen azaleas introduced by Joseph B. Gable of Stewartstown, Penn (Galle, p.194; Dirr, p. 724)
Do not confuse with the rhododendron Purple Splendour (note spelling difference), which has dark purple blooms with a black blotch, tight cluster.
