Greensleeves Chinese Dogwood
Habit Arguably one of the very best upright forms with a particularly fast growth rate and very well balanced branching. The branch pattern is upright at first eventually spreading to a well-kept oval to narrow vase shape.
Flower Excellent selection for flower with a heavy display of large overlapping bracts covering most of the tree. The flower color opens white with a hint of light green, when fully open it is mostly a soft pastel cream-white. Nice contrast from some of the other more "pure" white selections.
Foliage This is one of the best varieties for foliage. The size is normal or slightly larger than the species with a wavy leaf margin and having an exceptionally healthy look. The color is a waxy dark green with pronounced yellow green venation, a subtle but noticeable contrast. I know it seems a little over the top but after evaluating a number of plants for foliage I consider this one to be the archetype for dogwood leaves and find myself comparing it to all others for summer foliage. Fall colors are a combination or dark red to red-purple.
Fruit The display of strawberry like bright red fruits is fairly heavy and somewhat oversized, it is particularly noticeable against the dark green leaves.
Ht./Sp. 17 to 25 feet / 15 to 18 feet.
Zone 5 possibly 4 to 8 - Several reports from customers in OH, WI and MI indicate this is one of, or possibly the only, C. Kousa chinenesis type that reliably thrives in winter conditions that render the other selections inneffectual.
